All hail this ominous entrance.I managed to drag my butt out of bed and get on down to Fort Mason on Saturday to check out the San Francisco Breast Fest. Traditionally it's held over at Larkspur Landing in Marin but this year the organizers decided to expand the festival by moving to a bigger space. Enter Fort Mason Herbst Pavillion.
I was pretty zonked from the night before: I had only gotten about three hours of sleep. I don't own a TV and my sisters' boyfriend has a 57-inch monstrosity and a great Blue-Ray collection. Having never seen a Blue-Ray movie before I was pretty blown away and ended up watching The Dark Knight, The Professional, and Star Trek until 6am. After hopping on BART, walking a quarter of the way and then finally taking a bus, I was at Fort Mason and groggy as hell.
The live music was kicking.I was really excited to go because I figured it was a great chance to meet a lot of the brewers of the smaller breweries, reps of the larger ones, etc. I had heard through the grapevine that, like Boonville, brewers liked to attend this event and there are few volunteers. I was not disappointed.
Brewers from all over California had booths and because the place wasn't packed it was incredibly easy to approach them and talk about what was going on with their breweries.
Always a treat to see the guys from Ale Industries.Pizza Orgasmica is still working on permits for an actual brewhouse they hope to open. Uncommon Brewers are still under construction but hope to accommodate visitors in the near future. Russian River had 9-liter bottles of their beer that one might be able to snag if you beg hard enough. Mad River is trying to get more of their product down to the Bay Area (I begged them for their Black Ale, it's damn good and you can find it at Bev Mo!). It's this kind of trivia I love to hear and store away for later use. Now if only I could remember the names of people as well as I remember useless trivia.
Om nom nom nom nom!The band at the event was rockin'. Their cover of "Don't Stop Believing" got everyone fired up, but there wasn't much dancing except for the occasional odd-ball that reminded me of a Dead concert. You know the type, dancing by themselves, waving around like they're on drugs. I guess someone has to get things started.
The food blew me away. I was used to SF Beer Fest food which, although also very good, was always in limited supply. There were stacks of sandwiches, bowls and bowls of chili, and plenty of water. I have to hand it to the organizers, this was an amazing meal.
All in all, it was a great time. It didn't sell out which could have been because it was a beer festival during the day and the weather outside was perfect. If they had moved it to the evening I wonder if they could have sold more tickets. Then again, more people means less food and beer for me...
